Disablements / Enablements
A disciplined approach to temporary fire-alarm disablements, with emphasis on scope, consequences, restoration and verification.
Before changing a live system: agree the test/disablement with the responsible person, identify any ARC/fire-routing connection and plant interfaces, decide what must remain operational, record every temporary change, and restore/verify everything before leaving.
DISABLEMENT HIERARCHY
Disable the smallest safe scope
1. DevicePreferred for a single known detector/input where the panel supports it.
2. Zone / input groupUse when work affects an area or a group of related inputs.
3. Output / output groupUse to suppress a defined plant/sounder action while keeping detection active.
4. Global output/routingHighest operational impact; use only when necessary and actively manage the risk.
Before disabling
- Identify exactly what will no longer happen.
- Check whether MCPs are included or excluded by a zone disablement.
- Check whether outputs in that zone still operate from other causes.
- Check fire routing/ARC and fire-protection outputs separately.
- Record start time, reason, scope and responsible engineer.
Before re-enabling
- Remove test smoke/heat and restore field devices.
- Clear keyswitch or logic-driven disablement inputs first.
- Re-enable the exact scope and review the active-disablement list.
- Reset if required by that panel family.
- Confirm no hidden or supervisory disablements remain.
Do not assume a disabled zone means βnothing in that zone can operate.β Some systems disable only input processing, some exclude MCPs, and some outputs remain available to operate from causes elsewhere in the system. Always verify the installed system's behaviour.
